Some people (like myself) initially try higher wattage bulbs in the factory housings... but that does nothing more than put a lot of stress on the factory wiring. So, the obvious solution is to remove the original lamps and replace them with something lamps more efficient.
I wound up picking the Blazer All Weather Fog Lamps. Plastic housings, replaceable glass lenses, and very nice 55watt H3 bulbs. They project a very bright mild-amber (almost white... but not quite) light and pierce right through the fog.
You will need a small selection of tools. Wrench to remove the original for lamps, a drill, a couple of drill bits (one pilot, the other to match the size of the new fog light mounting bolts), four one inch long 1/2 inch copper fittings, a pair of wire cutters (or hacksaw... you'll see), and a couple pairs of pliers.
The above shows what must be done to the factory mounting brackets. A slight bend must be made in both brackets to allow the new lamps to fit properly.
Then drill a hole to accept the new lamps...
New lamp mounted in factory bracket...
This is the most difficult part. You need to take one of the four springs and cut it into 1/4s. I used a pair of heavy duty dykes. But I would suggest that you use a hacksaw or something similar. The springs are made of a very dense (spring steel) steel and are very difficult to cut with just dykes.
The rest is all reassembly and wiring...
These pictures show how the assembly looks after installed. Do you see where the copper fittings and the cut springs go? And notice that I used the original wires from the original fog lamps so the fog lamp plug (from lamp to harness) is still functional...
The lamps fit into the factory openings like they belong there. The light alignment was damn near perfect after I installed them... but a slight tug on the mounting bracket fixed that.
