High Idle...sometimes

Post your 3.0/3.2 technical questions related to engine and driveline here.

OK, gurus,

Not sure where to begin my diagnosis, so I'd like to see if anyone recognizes these symptoms...

My '89 SHO (mostly stock, with stock electronics) normally idles at 850-950rpm...

Recently it has begun idling at ~1500rpm...but intermittently,

1 - Sometimes this occurs within a minute of start...

2 - Other times this occurs after longer periods of running (10-30min)...

3 - Still other times it does not occur at all.

Most everytime I can "reset" the idle by shutting off the engine, then restarting, from which point I go back to 1 ...

Is this an IAB issue (replaced within last 2 years), or what?

Thanks for any and all inputs!

I'd say replace the TPS. Sounds like it has a bad spot in it where it doesnt always drop back down to <.95 Volts. You might try adjusting it to a little lower voltage. Just make sure that at idle the sensor voltage is less than .95 volts.

Why????

There is no indication of an O2 sensor problem!

Do I remember reading that a windstar TPS was a direct replacement? Does anyone have a part number?

lately my idle has been hanging like that as well

I've had my '90 for about a month and a half now, and it has always idled around 1250-1400 or so, very rarely going lower. Is the 850-950 RPM idle that SHO Mojo stated considered normal? If not, looks like I have more work to do :/ Well... it does have 132k on it now, and a questionable maintenance history, so... I guess that's to be expected.

idle should be 850rpm- 950 rpm, i think. above 1k and its too high.

try erasing the eec memory, and resetting the idle B)
